The Pond
A bit of woodwork!
Apart from attracting wildlife to the school garden, the other main reason for the pond is to act as a learning resource. The best (and safest) way of providing access to the pond for the children is to use a platform. This would allow them to see first-hand the wildlife that their garden supports.
A multi-national team set to work creating the platform one day in June 2001. England, Italy, Germany, Luxembourg and the Czech Republic each made their contributions!
A ‘cantilever’ design was employed in order to allow the platform to overhang the pond. This meant that two uprights supported the front of the platform using diagonal struts… sounds fancy, but it’s actually very simple!
To make sure everything fitted together properly we had to construct the platform in the carpark and carry it complete to its final resting place by the pond.
